Lumped Compensation of Nonlinearities based on Optical Phase Conjugation

Compensation of Kerr nonlinearity-induced distortions has been shown to allow for increasing transmission rate and reach, with optical compensation techniques particularly attractive broadband wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) scenarios. However, they normally require additional devices within the link, which is challenging already deployed systems, even more so unrepeatered transmission. In this work, we focus on providing lumped nonlinearity suppression, either at transmitter or receiver side, based phase conjugation (OPC). The theory design scaled-down OPC modules derived, it allows move beyond standard mid-link approach explore fibers types not directly linked dispersion properties link. This method then validated both through numerical investigations experimental demonstrations a number systems varying degree complexity. Ultimately, significant performance improvement by employing short OPC-based structures are carefully designed match much longer links.
